AP Gov A- Congressional Campaigns

We are in the heat of Congressional Campaigning. In years past, re-elections are almost a "lock" for incumbents....making many of them life-long public servants. This makes some desire term limits for senators or congressmen.

Senators run for election every 6 years, meaning 33 of them get elected every 2 years.
In the House, the congressmen serve only a 2-year term so all 435 are up for election/re-election every 2 years. That means right now there are about 470 congressional seats up for grabs.

We've already talked about the roll of the Tea Party in this year's primaries and now general election. Another key player is the media..... but to run for office people need money. period. Campaign funding is a MAJOR issue in politics. As you read this week you will be exposed to campaign finance rules.

But for this week's blog I want you to find a "hot" congressional campaign from around the country. There are tons to choose from.

Here's what I want you to do:
1. identify the Dem and Rep candidate
2. what is their story/type of government service.
3. What are the key issues in that campaign
4. who supports them- which types of interest groups endorsed and donated to their campaign.

For this week's blog- you do not need to reply to each other. Just scroll through the posts and check out the different types of contests going in the country.

I will give you until Thursday since you have to do some online searching this week!

  6. Im doing the race for Florida.

Florida actually has three candidates. Marco Rubio (Rep), Kendrick Meek (Dem), and Charlie Crist (Independent).

Rubio has an interesting story. His parents were cuban exiles. He was born in Miami. He is Catholic and speaks spanish. His first spot held in governement was City Commissioner for West Miami then in 2000 he won a seat in the House of Reps in the 111th district.

The Tea Party and veterans are groups that support Rubio.

Kendrick Meek was raised in a home full of politics. His mother ran for House of Reps when he was 12. When Meek was in College he founded and lead the Democrat club at Florida State. He graduated and became a police officer. In 1995 he decided he wanted to be in politics so he ran for House of Reps and won.

Groups that support Meek are pro-choice, environmentalists, teachers union, minorities, seniors, and women (hand in hand with pro-choice).

Crist has held many postitions but most notably Attorny General, a seat in senate, and now governor. Crist graduated as vice president at FSU and has a graduate degree in law. Interestingly, he is running as an Independent because he was losing the Republican race.

Groups that support Crist are independents, environmentalists, and defense offices

The major issues in the florida race are
    The economy
    Taxes and spending
    Veterans/national defense
    Health Care Reform

  9. i've decided to learn about Blunt (dem) running for senator of Missouri against robin Carnahan (rep).

He was a school teacher that had taken an open position in his county as a clerk. he spent 12 years in that position. He served on the federal electoral communication's advisory panel in 1983. He wrote a book about fair elections. he became a congressman and helped to secure fair elections in iraq (does not say how). He became a secretary of state after that and gave electronic access to corporate reports and records. Then, he became a legislator where he proposed "The largest tax cuts for working families in the nation's history."

The key issues here mainly deal with education, Creating jobs, strengthening the economy, and energy independence. Roy Blunt wants to promote a cleaner environment and
search for more efficient sources of energy.

The main supporters of blunt are National Right to Life, The small business coalition, and The Coalition of Missouri Veterans.

  14. 1. Rob Portman of Ohio. Republican.

    2. Basically because of his background in family business, he developed this sort of sense of entrepreneurship. He directed legislative affairs for the first President Bush, served in Congress for more than a decade and managed the Office of Management and Budget under Bush the younger.

    3. Portman says that trade barriers hurt American economic interests. He would have voted against the financial reforms passed this year. Portman favors a business-friendly platform with what he calls smart regulation.

  15. 1. Kirsten Gillibrand (Democrat) and Joe DioGuardi (Republican) are campaigning for a New York Senate seat.

    2. Both candidates, have experience in Congress and in other government practices. In 2006, Gillibrand won her first Congressional campaign. By 2009 she successfully filled the position of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's seat in the U.S. Senate. And she also, was once a special counsel for Andrea Cuomo, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and a law clerk on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. DioGuardi, on the other hand, between the years of 1985-1989, was elected to Congress's House of Representatives for two terms. He also is a Certified Public Accountant and has been heard at the Federal Accounting Standards and Advisory Board (all fiscal properties).

    3. Gilliland's main platform issues include opportunities to immigrants, marriage equality, reform on gun control laws, and always protecting a woman's right to choose. DioGuardi, on the contrary, runs on a platform supported by planks of closing the boarders on immigrants, creating budget reforms (to decrease spending), no/little gun control, and pro-life endorsements. However, both of them want to provide good-paying jobs/decrease unemployment, provide healthcare and more environment care, and better the quality of public schools.

    4. Some of the types of progressive leaders and organizations that endorse Kirsten include members of Congress (21 members), Progressive Organizations (58 organizations), and state leaders (about 167 individuals). So, for an example, some of her endorsements come from John Hall (Congressman), Gay and Lesbian Independent Democrats (GLID) (Progressive Organization), Harry Reid (U.S. Senate Majority Leader). For more exact name listings here is the site: http://www.kirstengillibrand.com/about?id=0002. While, Joe has only listed endorsements from PACs (about 3) and state/country leaders (about 39). So, for an example, some of his endorsements come from the New York Veterans Political Action Committee (PAC) and New York County Conservative Chair Stuart J. Avrick. For more exact name listings here is the site: http://www.dioguardiforussenate.com/endorsements.php. Judging from the information provided, Gillibrand seems to have more political financing (which maybe be the reason why she is currently ahead, according to the most recent polls).

  19. 1. Duncan D. Hunter (Republican)
    2. Duncan is a Congressman representing the 52nd district of California. He is a former U.S. Marine Captain and is the only combat veteran of the war on terror currently serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. Duncan was born and raised in San Diego, California. He earned a degree in Business Administration from San Diego State University. After 9/11, Duncan decided to quit his job and enlist in the Military and support the war. After serving for 5 years, he figured his leadership could be of more help elsewhere and declared his bid to run as Congressman in 2008 in his hometown, San Diego. He won the campaign and was obviously elected into the house in November 2008. He has a wife and 3 kids.
    3. Key Issues:
-Repeal the Obama/Pelosi healthcare takeover and replace it with common-sense, free-market reforms that will force health insurance companies to be accountable and transparent while, at the same time, increasing the quality and access of healthcare in America and reducing costs.
-Maintain a strong national security policy that funds the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps at appropriate levels and doesn’t cut defense spending during wartime for the first time in American history. President Obama’s attempt to cut our military must be stopped. Islamofascism must be defeated.
-Border Security that includes a COMPLETELY secure southern and northern border. Border security is national security. NO AMNESTY for those here illegally.
-Real Economic Growth that comes from a vibrant private sector. Fight the Obama/Pelosi takeover of every industry in the United States. Implement reform that will incentivize hard working Americans and entrepreneurs to create jobs. Bring manufacturing BACK from China and India to the United States.
-Tax cuts and fiscal responsibility are the keys to economic recovery and job growth. The American people are overtaxed and the government spends too much. We must have a balanced budget and every federal agency needs to be cut dramatically except for infrastructure and national defense.
-Energy independence. The only way to free ourselves from terrorist despots who negotiate international policy using oil prices is to keep working on alternative energy while at the same time following an “all of the above” approach. We must build more oil refineries, build nuclear facilities, and drill.
-Individual liberty and personal responsibility are the cornerstones of our great nation. The federal government’s role should be limited to protecting and defending our God given freedoms.

  21. 1.I am researching the race for the House seat for the 2nd Congressional District of Louisiana. The Democratic candidate Cedric Richmond is running up against the Republican incumbent Joseph Cao.

2.Cedric Richmond: was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 2000. Richmond is now Chairman of the committee on Judiciary and is also a member of the Ways and Means, House Executive, and Legislative Audit Advisory committees. He raised $250 million for the hurricane stricken areas through his creation of the State New Markets Tax Credit program. Richmond has previously supported small business incubators and grant programs.

Joseph Cao: ran as an Independent for Louisiana's House of Representatives in 2007. Cao also became a board member for the Mary Queen of Vietnam Community Development Corporation, which created charter schools, medical clinics, and retirement centers. Cao became a member of the Republican Parish Executive Committee, the State Republican Executive Committee, and the Louisiana delegation to the Republican National Convention. In 2008 he won the seat for the 2nd Congressional District of Louisiana as a Republican.

    3. Cedric Richmond:
    Health Care cost reduction
    protect homeowners from mortgage industries
    strengthen retirement security
focus more on education, not incarceration and ammend No Child Left Behind

    Joseph Cao:
continue funding local law enforcement agencies
goal of 95% highschool graduation rate
Adjust Healthcare according to local needs, focus on quality of healthcare for each individual
    improve system of storm barriers
promote economic investment and job growth, and lower taxes, and raise wages

    4.Cedric Richmond:
President Barack Obama, 2 U.S. Senators,3 State Senators, 14 State Representatives

    Joseph Cao:
Alliance for Good Government, 2 Chief of Police, The Spirit of Enterprise U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Farm Bureau Louisiana, Louisiana Realtors, 2 Home Builders Associations, New Orleans Coalition

Basically Richmond is running on the fact that he has the support of the president, and Cao is running on the fact that he has the support of local community groups

  22. The race in Ohio for H.R. in district 1 is between incumbent Steve Driehaus (D) and challenger Steve Chabot (R).

    2. Democrat Steve Driehaus is the incumbent runner who is finishing his first term in the house. In 2008 he defeated his opponent, seven-term congressman Steve Chabot, by just two points. He served as congressman for Ohio's 31st district from 2001-2009. He graduated from high school in the 80's and then studied at Miami University and Indiana University. Then he became the Associate Director of the Center for International Education and Development Assistance at Indiana University. He now now serves as a consultant to the Community Building Institute, a collaborative effort of Xavier University and United Way & Community Chest that promotes citizen-led, asset-based community development.
Republican candidate Steve Chabot was the House Representative of District 1 since 1994 but he lost his spot to this years incumbent in 2008. After losing his first primary race in 1988 to an imcumbent competitor he was elected comissioner of Hamilton County, Ohio.

    3.
Key issues in this campaign for Driehaus include: Driehaus was harshly criticized for voting for the health care reform bill, Driehaus is trying to demonstrate, like many Democrats will be, how congressional initiatives under the Democratic-held House and Obama administration are helping create and save jobs in the district, build and boost infrastructure and provide more affordable medical care under the health care system reform bill. He also talks about bringing more money into the Cincinnati has created new projects, such as the I-75 rehabilitation, the Banks Project and the Riverfront Intermodal Center.
Chabot on the other hand stands for internet taxation, tougher anit drug laws, he is an advocate for privacy, he talks about opposition to taxation and wasteful congressional spending and is a strong opponent of the recent health care reform bill. On social issues, he has noted he is pro-life.
Their two major differences are on the health care reform bill. Driehaus voted in favor of the bill, and Chabot is strongly opposed to the reform. Also, they disagree on issues of how to improve the job market in their district.

    4.
Chabot is endorsed by Vice President Joe Biden, and Driehaus gets support from Congressman Mike Huckabee.
